Rest for the Weary!

Do you know what Respite is?  Do you know how desperately it is needed by parents/caregivers of children or adults NL03. Christobal & Alettawho have a disability?   Have you thought about as a parent how tired and stressed you could be…imagine if you add in a disability…

Easter Seals Greater Houston Respite Services provides relief options to parents who provide ongoing care of their family member who has a disability. Many parents of children and adults with disabilities have low incomes simply due to being a one working parent family out of necessity and cannot afford to hire providers to provide time away from their children. Many people with disabilities require 24-hour, around-the-clock supervision, attention and care. This continuous demand becomes a tremendous drain on caregivers emotionally, physically and mentally – this care will remain constant as they grow older. Consequently, families of children with disabilities are at high risk for divorce, substance abuse and child abuse because of the continuing stress of caring for the child with disabilities. Respite care is an assistance program to parents, but just as importantly, is a prevention program aimed at stopping some of the social problems that can result from the tremendous demands made on families due to the disabilities of their child or the institutionalization of the family member with a disability.  girl at campThere are several forms of respite that our Respite Services offers – one of them being “respitality” – or a complete night off knowing that your child is being taken care of by someone who is familiar with the issues…it might be a date night to re-acquaint with your spouse, it might be a night to spend with another child who might not receive as much attention…nevertheless…it is dependent on companies such as hotels and restaurants in our community that donate hotel stays, dinners etc.  Easter Seals Greater Houston is so very appreciative of these donors and so are our families that benefit….

Thank you Easter Seals for providing my husband and I the opportunity to spend time together away from the day-to-day stress of everyday life. It was good to focus on each other and we even made a rule to only talk about us or fun and light topics. The hotel was beautiful and their customer service was great! We enjoyed the breakfast that was provided and  we spent a lot of our time in the pool and then drove down to the beach for dinner using some door prizes we won at a carnival that we never had time to redeem! It was great not worrying about going out to get food, especially since during that particular time our funds were very low.Dante & Vol

It was also great to have time to ourselves to use the strategies we learned at the Easter Seals Greater Houston marriage workshop.  I think it helped us by providing us the opportunity for success in using the strategies provided to us, without going back to stressful situations and not having successful attempts.

Again, we are very grateful for the opportunity and it is a great feeling to know that agencies such as yours think about unique families such as ours. Again, thanks for the bottom of our hearts, The Contreras Family

We have had great success with hotels like our local DoubleTrees‘, Crowne Plaza, Hilton’s, Hyatt’s and Wyndham’s but not continually (times are tough for everyone!) and there are always families on the waiting lists.  Please think about spreading the word to those you know in the hotel industry…you might just save a marriage. We are always happy to talk to anyone about the program, contact us with questions or ideas!
