Adult Bowling is Right Up Our Alley

You can hear the ball rolling down the alley, the pins fall, and a cheer from a group of friends. They are frequent visitors of AMF Windern Lanes, meeting up at the lanes on most 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month throughout the year. bowling2Adult Bowling is a great tradition being upheld by a special group of Easter Seals Greater Houston‘s Adult Program, one that is rare and highly valued by both participants and volunteers.

Across the United States, especially in Texas, services for individuals with disabilities are shockingly sparse once they turn 18. Easter Seals Greater Houston recognized this need and created opportunities for adults with disabilities to live, learn, work and play in our community. Easter Seals Greater Houston offers two Adult Programs on Mondays and Wednesdays. These programs are free to the adults and offer activities such as yoga, painting, self defense, crafts, cooking, field trips, sporting events, and much more! Another popular program is Easter Seals Greater Houston‘s Adult Bowling Program that allows for program partipants to play 3 games for only $5. These Saturdays offer them another opportunity to connect to one another and the community. The Adult Bowling Program is equally loved by our incredible volunteers.

One of our great volunteers shares that:

“Being able to put a smile on our adult client’s faces is so rewarding. Bowling and a social outing is something they do  not get to do regularly, and knowing thabowling3t I am making their day better by helping them bowl, be out in the community, seeing friends is such a great feeling. Our clients are so happy when they are done bowling, and they are what make this project so fun for me. I love seeing how excited my friends get when they get a strike or how competitive they can be when bowling with their friends. My favorite memory from bowling is when Robert almost got a turkey (3 strikes in a row). He was so excited, and I loved knowing that I had contributed to his happiness. Easter Seals Greater Houston Adult Bowling Program on Saturdays is such an easy way to make a difference in someone else’s life and such a fun way to spend my Saturday.”

Young Adult Program Explores Nature

young adult 1Easter Seals Greater Houston’s Young Adult Program had a fantastic time at the Nature Discovery Center in Bellaire, TX.  Big thanks to the Nature Discovery Center for hosting our group and giving us a great discount!  Our young adults walked the nature trails, learned about and held the reptiles, learned about how the small creatures in the soil and trees help to keep everything living and thriving, and discussed the importance of nature.  The Young Adult Program already has plans to return to the Nature Discover Center – next time as volunteers!  They will help weed, water, and care for a part of the property.

Do you know a young adult who would benefit from participating in Easter Seals’ Young Adult Program?  Our young young adult 2adults attend field trips such as this one and participate in bi-weekly recreation and social opportunities.  If you are interested in more information about the Young Adult Program or program eligibility, please contact Ashley Davis, Assistant Program Coordinator, at adavis@eastersealshouston.org.
