Tummy Time Tips!

  1. START EARLY AS SOON AS YOU GET HOME WITH BABY
    1. All surfaces count for tummy time.
      1. ON CHEST
      1. ON LEGS
      1. ON FLOOR
      1. ON BED
  • Get in the habit and use routines of the day to remind you
    • After waking
    • After feeding
    • After diaper changes
    • Start with a few minutes and build up from there
    • Use a towel or blanket roll under the chest to help with lifting the head
    • Provide counter pressure to back and legs to also help with head lift
  • BE CONSISTENT
  • HABITS STARTED EARLY WILL CARRY OVER AND HELP WITH OTHER SKILLS
  • WHY IS TUMMY TIME IMPORTANT?
    • BUILD CERVICAL AND UPPER BODY STRENGTH
    • STRETCH HIPS AND BACK
    • PREPARE FOR MORE ADVANCED SKILLS SUCH AS CREEPING, CRAWLING, AND SITTING
  • RED FLAGS
    • Not holding head up on tummy by 2-3 months
    • Not able to turn head to one side while on tummy at birth-1 month
  • REMEMBER TUMMY TIME IS TO BE DONE WHEN BABY IS AWAKE AND ALWAYS PUT BABY BACK TO SLEEP
